Why Cloth Diaper?

Some Diaper Facts:

Know what’s in your diapers.
ALL disposable diapers contain an ingredient called sodium polyacrylate. This turns water (or in our case, urine) into gel like crystals. The FDA banned this toxic chemical from tampons in 1985 because it was dangerous to humans. They found it linked to Toxic Shock Syndrome, as well as other diseases, yeast growth, skin rashes and irritations. They however continue to use it in paper diapers because it is the only ingredient that can absorb liquid so fast... making a thin paper diaper do it’s job. Without this ingredient, you might as well wrap your child in a paper towel. Cloth diapers use natural fabrics to retain and absorb moisture, they do not contain any chemicals, and therefore parents notice no rash... no smells... a clean, happy, safe baby.

Know how you are helping the planet.
30,000,000,000 (yes, thirty BILLION) diapers per year are sent to landfills. These diapers build up and take over 500 years to decompose. During this 500 year span, they send toxic gasses that we breathe every day into our ozone. Your ONE baby will use approximately 3,800 diapers per year, which will contribute to our landfill mess. Just think of the impact your have on our environment with only ONE baby in cloth diapers. Imagine the possibility of hundreds... thousands...
Yes, we know water is a scarce resource, and should be conserved. Water waste, unlike landfill waste is recyclable. If you washed diapers every three days, the amount of water you use only equal flushing a toilet 4 times per day. You would probably flush a toilet more if your child were potty trained.

Know how much money you will save.
Cloth diapering in the long run will save you a lot of money! In this economy... that might be your ONLY reason to switch, and that is OK!
Each paper diaper runs about $.18 for the small sizes. They run around $.21 for the large sizes.
If you child is using the average of 3,800 per year: you are spending $733.00 per year... Say you spend about $50.00 per year one the wipes, trash bags for diaper pails, and the ever so expensive diaper creams.
The average child is in diapers for 2.5 years.
This would mean, for ONE child... you would spend close to $2000 in paper diapers, $2,000 in something you use ONCE and throw away!

Cloth diapers SOUND expensive at first... but when the price is broken down, they save LOTS of money!
Most cloth diapers these days fit sizes 7 lbs - 35+ lbs , which is the ENTIRE diapering life of a child.
A stash of 24 diapers, 24 wipes (which is enough material to last 3 days or so) a diaper pail, a wet bag and re-usable pail liner, wipe solutions, as well as detergent can run around $300-$700.

I'm sure you quickly tried to do that math in your head...
with ONE child in cloth diapers, over 2.5 years (using the popular one size fits all diaper) you will save around $1,300 to $1,700 dollars.
If you have more than one child in cloth diapers, you'll save even more!
In this economy, there is NO better way to cut a few costs!

Know what is best for baby and mama.
Not only is cloth diapering JUST BETTER... they are so much cuter, softer, and just fun in general. Most diapers are now daddy, grandparent, babysitter, and daycare friendly because the way they are designed are just like the paper diaper. They either snap or velcro on... no more folding or pins are needed! Best of all... no more infant blowouts! They are easy to clean, and become second nature in no time.
