Step ONE.. Taking off the dirty diaper
Take off the diaper, and clean baby as necessary. I highly recommend using cloth wipes, and the Sudzy Baby Organic Wipes Solution.
If you baby is breastfeeding, the diapers can go directly into the diaper pail. Breastmilk poo is benign and is not harmful what-so-ever to put straight into the washing machine.
If your baby has solid poo, simply dump the solids into the toilet and flush down. If you are using a liner, simply flush it or throw it away. I always do a quick spray off with the diaper sprayer and lay it outside to dry before putting in the pail. It is never necessary to spray off, but it's my personal preference. Sometimes poo will make a stain, but the sun will bleach it out within an hour!
If the diaper is only wet, it can go straight into the pail. Again, I choose to spray off the diaper and lay it outside to dry before putting it in the pail.
I recommend separating your diaper from the insert before putting in the pail
Step TWO... Washing
Every 2-4 days (depending on how many diapers you have) you will need to wash your dirty diapers.
The entire diaper (outer piece and inner microfiber absorbency inserts) goes into the wash. Your wetbags and pail liner will go in as well. Since I separate my diapers before putting them into the pail... I simply dump the entire pail liner into the washing machine, without touching a single diaper!
I do a quick pre-rinse on cold. This is not always necessary, just a personal preference.
I then do a long hot wash, with 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of Country Save Detergent, depending on how many diapers I'm washing.
I follow the wash with two cold rinses, and then pop the diapers in the dryer before going to bed.
In the morning, I have yummy clean diapers... ready to be stuffed and put away.
Does detergent matter?
YES. Do not use any detergents with fragrance, and never use Dreft on diapers. Using these kind of detergents leaves a residue on your diapers that can cause skin irritations and over time will cause stink build up. No fun!
I HIGHLY recommend using Country Save Detergent. I sell a 10 pound box for $16.99 which will last forever! There have been multiple studies done on Country Save. It is biodegradable, and will never leave any residues or film on your diapers.
Another brand I love and carry is Sudzy Baby. It is made with all natural ingredients and made by a mom.
Other brands that have been recommended for cloth diapers are: Purex Free and Clear, Allens, and Charlie's Soap. Again, I have tried all and prefer Country Save.
Stripping? What, When, and Why?
When you start to notice a odor on your diapers, or accidently washed them with the wrong detergent, accidently put fabric softener in the dryer, or if you just feel like making them "yummy, fresh, and cleaner than clean" it's time to strip your diapers!
What does it mean to strip diapers?
Stripping diapers means: a deep clean, restoring them back to normal.
How often can or should you strip your diapers?
You can strip them as often as you need. I recommend stripping them at least once every 3-4 months, and no more than once per week.
How do you strip diapers?
This is exactly how I recommend to strip a diaper:
(yes, it takes a long time... but it's well worth it!)
1. Wash diapers as normal without putting them in the dryer.
2. Run a long hot wash with a teaspoon of Dawn dish detergent. The original blue plain ole' Dawn. Do not use any other type of Dawn.
3. Do two (2) complete rinse cycles. If you have a top loader or HE washing machine, it might even 3 rinses. Rinse until there are NO more suds in the water. If there are suds in the water, rinse again. Yes, I have heard of people having to rinse up to 6 times.
4. Put your diapers in the dryer as normal.
5. Enjoy fresh, new diapers!
Why are there so many suds in the water, even if you did a few rinses?
Most diapers are made with microfiber which absorbs everything! This means that little particles of your diapering soap is absorbed. This causes diapers to stink a little over some time. When they are stripped, the excess soaps are pulled from the fabric and rinse away. The more the suds, the more your diapers needed to be stripped! If you are needed to do more than 4 rinses, you need to strip more often.
BumGenius 3.0 pocket diapers recommend bleaching every month?
Yes, this is recommended by the manufacture. Sort of the same idea, microfiber and synthetic fibers hold onto everything. It is recommended to add one tablespoon on non-chlorine bleach into your BumGenius 3.0 diaper laundry (ONLY BG 3.0s.... NO OTHER DIAPER RECOMMENDS THIS) If you are stripping your diapers regularly, this might not be needed. Yes, you can wash both the inserts and the outer shells. The bleach will in no way damage the color of your diaper.
I recommend never to wash diapers in vinegar, as it ruins PUL over time and will make your diapers non-waterproof.
